The Story Behind the Name

Daniel Wright and his brother Charles traveled from New York to St. Louis with their wild animals and sideshow, which became known as the American Circus, before they both finally settled in Dublin. Over time, Daniel amassed many acres in and around Dublin for farming and operated an oil well for several years on his land on the southwest corner of Dublin Road and Bridge Street. As one of the earliest settlers in the Dublin area, Wright took on many roles to help make Dublin a better community. The town wanted to be connected to the postal service, so he became the first postmaster in Washington Township. The community needed a larger and better school, so he provided some of his land and helped John Sells build a stone schoolhouse located on Riverview Street; the town needed law and order, so he became the Justice of the Peace. Many people see the needs of others, but few are willing to do what is necessary, especially when they have to give something of themselves. Wright did all of this and more while undertaking the task of being a successful farmer in a region still considered wild. Daniel Wright died in 1864 and is buried in the City of Dublin Cemetery, formerly known as the I.O.O.F. Cemetery (Independent Order of Odd Fellows, Lodge 104).
